Keep Writing no. 124 August 2019

What do you collect?

Moving my press into the space at Paper Machine in New Orleans, meant I had room to work and got to interact with the artists who came to work there through residencies and those who used their print services.

Monica Tyran was organizing and cleaning a donation of type to Paper Machine when we met. She agreed to collaborate for a postcard. We printed samples of some of the type using black ink on a borrowed flatbed press. Then I scanned the images and created the image above, an overlay of three different typefaces. We chose this method to preserve the integrity of the type.

The type was the remains of a collection from Gosserand Superior Printers, A Black-owned printshop in New Orleans who printed posters for music events.

Printed with polymer plates on my Heidelberg Windmill, on French Paper.
