Keep Writing no. 82 January 2016

Your favorite silence.

When a paper making artist put out a call for artists to use her images of Antarctica anyway they liked, I replied instantly. I don’t remember how we found each other, but soon enough I received a few photographs in the mail as inspiration for my work. I separated a photo of the antarctic landscape into three layers, made plates from the subtle images, and printed them in pale blues. One layer is a barely-there pale pale transparent base with a kiss of pigment.

I love quiet. As a person who talks constantly, my family and friends may find this hilarious. But it is true. I have never been to Antarctica so I have not experienced the sounds there but the colors and subtle hues seemed to pair well with a quote about silence from Rumi.

This postcard was included in a show about these photographs of Antarctica organized by Allyson Comstock.

Letterpress printed with polymer plates on paper from French Paper on a borrowed Heidelberg Windmill.
