Keep Writing no. 63 June 2014

New address.

Ok, I moved into a new place in Oakland, a beautiful old victorian that charmed me with a sunny front room and a tiny back yard. It soon revealed its own problems but in this first month I set up a studio in the front room which had gold flocked wallpaper. We had many small parties in this space, had friends sleep in the living room, watched the godfather at Christmas.

I used the wall paper pattern of my new studio to illustrate our new address card. This is the second envelope card I made—the first for scraps to include in handmade paper for a show. This was a chance for folks to catch up and send whatever they’ve bene holding onto.

Here’s the secret: lots of people never send anything back. Many people send cards months or years later. One friend arrived at the 10th anniversary show with a stack of card and answered them all. He still has a subscription. Once every few months I receive an envelope of responses. Only once was there an end date (summer 2018 but we’ll get to that). I don’t keep track. Honestly. Most of you don’t sign your names and I don’t recognize your handwriting. My cousin Ashley and my pal Janet are exceptions. So don’t be afraid. Send in your cards whenever you can.
